From Tools to Tibetan Bowls: Meet Scott Rowlands, the Brookvale Tradie-Turned-Sound Healer

It’s not every day you meet a tradie-turned-sound-healer. But then again, Scott Rowlands - known to many as Himavan - isn’t your average bloke.
Raised on the Northern Beaches, Scott spent years working on tools before his life took a quieter, more conscious turn. What started with a single meditation CD two decades ago has since evolved into Cosmic Earth Crystals - a tucked-away Brookvale sanctuary where crystal bowls, Tibetan singing bowls, drums and bells take centre stage in deeply transformative sound baths.
“I never imagined this would be my path,” Scott says, reflecting on the journey that began when he stumbled into meditation and energy healing. “But once I started, it opened something up in me that I didn’t even know was there.”
That spark was lit while listening to the hypnotic hum of crystal bowls on a Byron Bay CD, music that resonated so deeply he tracked down the woman who made it and attended one of her sound healing workshops. “It stuck with me,” he says. “The bowls spoke to something ancient, and I knew I had to keep going.”

Fast-forward 15 years and Scott’s been studying and sharing this work ever since, with guidance from shamans, gurus, and spiritual teachers in India, Nepal, Tibet, Peru, and right here in Australia’s red centre. He’s learned that it’s not just about playing bowls, it’s about presence. About tuning in, deeply, to the people in the room and the energy of the moment. “The bowls respond to that. It becomes a co-creation.”
So what exactly is sound healing? And why are more people turning to it now?
“It’s vibrational medicine,” Scott explains. “At our core, we’re all just energy - vibrating atoms. When someone lies down in a sound session, the vibrations from the instruments interact with their energy field. They move through the body, the chakras, and help shift whatever’s stuck.”
And that can be a lot, because let’s face it, life is a lot these days. Stress, anxiety, emotions we’ve been carrying for years, even trauma stuck in the body. “People are overwhelmed,” he says. “The world’s noisy. These sessions give you a moment to pause, recalibrate, and actually feel like yourself again.”

Inside his Brookvale studio, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into another world entirely. Tucked behind a roller door in an otherwise industrial corner of town, the space opens into something soft, sacred and deeply calming. Warm lighting, calming scents, crystal grids, handmade instruments and plush beanbags set the tone for what’s to come.
“We keep it intimate,” Scott says. “Eight people max. That way everyone has the space to drop in and feel held.”
And people do. He’s had clients leave in tears of joy, release, or relief. Some come back week after week. Others just drop in when they feel off-balance and need to reset.
“I’ve had people say it helped with insomnia, with clarity, with pain. Some say they’ve had visions, others say it just gave them the first peaceful moment they’ve had in weeks. It’s different every time and for everyone.”
Some might expect a new-age vibe, but what Scott offers is far more grounded than that. “I’m not here to perform. I’m here to hold space. I’m here to be present and guide the session based on what’s actually needed in the room, not what I think should happen.”
That includes himself. He shares a moment that stayed with him in a session where, while playing, his own emotional release came through. “The bowls brought something up in me and I just allowed it. At the end, this huge wave of creative energy hit. It reminded me how alive and intuitive this work is.”
He’s the first to admit that the work isn’t always light and breezy. “Sometimes the bowls bring up things people have buried deep. But that’s part of the healing. We shift old patterns by facing them - not bypassing them.”
So what would he say to someone who’s curious, but unsure?
“Come with an open mind. You don’t have to ‘do’ anything. Just lie down and receive. Whatever comes up, I’m there to hold space for it. Whether it’s sadness, stillness, joy or release - it’s all welcome. It’s just energy moving.”

It’s that simplicity and safety that keeps people coming back. There’s no pressure to perform, no expectation to “have an experience.” It’s just you, the sound, and whatever comes through.
And that’s exactly what Scott offers at Cosmic Earth Crystals: a gentle space to let go of what’s been weighing you down and reconnect with who you really are. Not with words or logic - but through vibration, breath, and a deep sense of presence.
“The bowls are just one part,” he says. “The real work is coming back to your own heart.”
