The Northern Beaches' hidden speakeasy? Lilly's Bar is unlike anywhere else on the peninsula

For years, I've quietly complained that if you wanted a genuinely great cocktail bar, you'd probably have to leave the Northern Beaches.

Don't get me wrong, we've got spectacular beaches, brilliant cafés and no shortage of places for a casual drink. But finding somewhere that feels genuinely different? Somewhere with atmosphere, personality and a little mystery? That's always been a little harder.

And then I was let in on the dirty little secret that is Lilly's Bar.

Hidden inside Manly Spirits Distillery in Brookvale, Lilly's feels like one of those places you're almost reluctant to tell people about. Not because it isn't good, but because once everyone discovers it, getting a table almost certainly would become impossible. And let's face it, no one wants to queue for a great bar when they could have discovered it first.

We visited on Aperitivo Friday and, from the moment we walked through the doors, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd stepped into a hidden Prohibition-era speakeasy.

Maybe I've watched too much Boardwalk Empire, but there was something undeniably nostalgic and fabulous about it. The lighting is low, the music is just right, and for a little while you forget you're in Brookvale at all.

It feels like you've slipped into an underground bar somewhere in Chicago where cocktails are taken seriously, conversations linger and there's just enough mischief in the air to make the whole experience feel deliciously illicit.

It's sophisticated without trying too hard, cool without being pretentious and perhaps best of all, it's a venue designed for grown-ups.

What surprised me most was the space itself. So many intimate bars seem to think 'cosy' means squeezing everyone into a room barely bigger than your lounge room. You spend half the night apologising as you bump chairs, awkwardly shuffling past strangers and trying not to become an unwilling participant in the conversation happening six inches from your ear.

Lilly's somehow achieves the opposite. The venue is generous in size, yet it never feels cavernous or lacking atmosphere. Every corner still feels intimate. Every table feels like somewhere you could happily lose a few hours over good conversation. It's clever design and, frankly, something we don't see enough of on the Northern Beaches.

Then there's the food. Rather than feeling like an afterthought, the menu has been thoughtfully curated to sit alongside the cocktails. We shared a selection of appetisers, from the truffle and porcini croquettes to the generous grazing board, and everything was beautifully presented, fresh and full of flavour.

On Aperitivo Night, the menu feels perfectly matched to the drinks, encouraging you to graze, sip and settle in rather than race through a meal.

The staff deserve a mention too. Attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without lecturing and genuinely warm. Hospitality can sometimes feel a little transactional these days, but nothing here ever felt rushed. They wanted people to settle in, stay awhile and enjoy themselves.

And then... the gin. Well, this is where Lilly's Bar really comes into its own. Considering you're drinking inside one of Australia's most awarded craft distilleries, perhaps that shouldn't come as a surprise.

Whether you're already a devoted gin drinker or simply curious about what all the fuss is about, this is the place to discover just how versatile gin can be. The cocktails feels thoughtfully crafted rather than simply poured, allowing the botanicals to shine without overwhelming the drink. If gin is your thing, you've probably just found your new favourite bar. 

What I loved most, though, wasn't any one cocktail or dish. It was the feeling. There's an energy about Lilly's that feels vintage yet fresh for the Northern Beaches. Live music drifts through the space, people actually talk to one another instead of staring at their phones, and there's none of the forced 'look at me' atmosphere that some venues mistake for nightlife. It feels authentic, like somewhere you'll return with different friends because you know they'll love discovering it too.

As the Northern Beaches continues to evolve, venues like Lilly's Bar prove we don't need to head into the city for a memorable night out anymore. Sometimes the best discoveries are hiding in plain sight. In this case, behind the doors of a working distillery in Brookvale.
