They’re plush, oversized, and undeniably daggy - but on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Ugg boots are less of a fashion statement and more a way of life.

From Manly to Palm Beach, these sheepskin staples have been padding through coastal homes, café queues, and surf car parks for decades. And if you think they’re just a relic of early 2000s celebrity culture, think again: Uggs are as homegrown as it gets.

Come June, the mornings turn crisp, and as our trusty thongs are reluctantly retired, the quiet shuffle of Uggs resurfaces from the back of the wardrobe. Like clockwork, they return - paired with hoodies, mismatched tracksuits, leggings, and, yes, even full pyjama sets at Woolies. They’re spotted at the Manly ferry wharf, kicking up sand on the Freshwater dunes, and tucked under café benches from Narrabeen to Avalon.

But while they may read as a punchline to out-of-towners, on the Beaches, Uggs carry history. Real history.

It was the 1960s, and surfers - some still dripping after hitting the swells - started pulling on sheepskin boots post-surf to beat the winter chill. They weren’t trying to start a trend. They were just bloody cold.

Avalon Beach is often credited as ground zero for the movement, where board riders made Uggs a post-surf essential, worn with as much pride as their wetsuits. It wasn’t long before the boots spread to other local beaches, passed down through surf families like heirlooms.

Decades later, the world caught on. Celebrities from Kate Hudson to Gigi Hadid donned Uggs between sets, turning them into a global ‘off-duty’ fashion moment. In 2023, the Y/Project collaboration and Ugg minis worn with oversized coats re-entered the high fashion chat. But let’s be real - the Northern Beaches never stopped wearing them. It’s not ironic here. It’s a ritual.

Today, a pair of Uggs says you’ve graduated from the shivering blow-ins who haven’t figured out winter on the coast. They thrown on as we get out of bed and head to the kitchen, worn on school drop-offs, and tossed on after ice baths. They're a badge of honour among tradies, surfers, creatives, and the barefoot locals who know that comfort always wins.

Sure, they may be ‘ugly-chic’ now, but for those who live here, Uggs have always been in fashion because, quite frankly, we don't give a damn. Long before Vogue called it a trend, it was just what you wore after your morning dip, hair still salty, fingers curled around a takeaway hot chocolate.

So next time you spot someone shuffling down the beach in Uggs, paired with just about anything - smile quietly and feel proud to be part of the laid-back local code. We’re all just living the Northern Beaches Ugg Life.
