Tucked into the heart of Freshwater village just minutes from the beach, this place isn’t just another local bistro, it’s one of those rare finds that manages to feel like a home away from home and a fine dining experience all at once. And if you’re like us, once you go, you’ll go again. And again. And again.
We’re officially obsessed.
Let’s start with the welcome. The moment you step through the doors, you’re not just another table - you’re greeted like a regular, even if it’s your first time. That’s thanks in large part to Neani, the ever-warm, ever-glamorous, mermaid-haired maître d’ who runs the floor with a perfect blend of professionalism and genuine passion. She knows the menu inside out, makes a cracking wine recommendation, and always manages to make you feel like the most important guest in the room, which, let’s be honest, is rare these days.

The Ambience: Casual Coastal Luxury
Teddy Larkin’s strikes the perfect balance between polished and laid-back. Think dark wood, mood lighting, and a comforting hum of conversation, with smooth coastal grooves and vintage yacht rock playing softly in the background. It’s the kind of place that’s exactly as busy as it should be – lively enough to give you that warm, bustling energy without being so loud you can’t hear your own table, and never so quiet that you’re forced to eavesdrop on the next table’s conversation. Whether you’re walking in wearing heels for a quick drink before heading out, or donning sandshoes straight from the gym or a coastal walk, Teddy welcomes you in and makes it work. It’s elegant without being intimidating. A place you can take a date, the parents, or just yourself when you feel like spoiling yourself silly.

The Menu: Old-School Done Right (with a Side of Heaven)
Now, let’s talk food. And I mean food. The kind that makes your eyes roll back in your head a little bit with the first bite.
The menu is a nod to modern Australia’s surf and turf, with premium cuts of meat, beautifully fresh seafood, and hearty sides that feel both nostalgic and elevated. Portions are generous – no tiny, fancy-nothing plates here – and everything is consistently cooked to perfection.
If you try just one thing (though honestly, stopping at one would be a mistake), make it the garlic prawns in cream sauce. I don’t know what kind of wizardry goes on in Teddy’s kitchen, but this dish is rich, full of flavour, and totally addictive. It’s the kind of plate that ruins garlic prawns anywhere else – I’ve genuinely contemplated licking it clean. I may or may not have actually done that. Not my finest moment, I’ll admit.
The steaks? Impeccably done. Chargrilled, juicy, and always cooked exactly how you ask (which shouldn’t be a novelty, but these days, it kind of is). Pair it with their mash - smooth, buttery, almost indecent - and thank me later.

Seafood lovers will be in heaven. From perfectly grilled Moreton Bay bugs to the fresh oysters, the produce is top-tier and handled with real respect in the kitchen. They don’t try to do too much. They just do it right.
And vegetarians - don’t think you’ve been forgotten. The seasonal veg sides, salads, and plant-based mains are full of flavour and creativity. It’s a place that caters without compromising.
The Wine List: Small But Mighty
Wine-wise, you’re in good hands. The list is tight, thoughtful, and leans heavily into Australian producers - which we love. Whether you’re after a bold red to pair with steak or something crisp and coastal for seafood and sunsets, they’ll have something that fits the bill. And if you’re not sure? Just ask Neani. She always nails the recommendation.
They also do a fantastic espresso martini, if you’re the type that likes to finish with a bit of drama (guilty). Or kick things off that way. No judgement here.

The Service: It’s the People That Make It
What really sets Teddy’s apart, though, is the team. The staff are friendly, switched-on, and clearly love what they do - which makes a huge difference to the vibe. They’re across everything and make the whole experience feel smooth, seamless, and genuinely enjoyable.
It’s that perfect balance of casual and polished. You’re not being fussed over or hovered around, but you’re also never left wanting for anything.
It’s rare. And it’s the reason we keep coming back.

A Local Gem That Deserves the Love
Freshwater has no shortage of great cafés and casual eats, but when it comes to elevated dining with a warm, local heart, Teddy Larkin’s is in a league of its own. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t need gimmicks or trends – just incredible food, great wine, and people who, quite frankly, give a damn.
Whether you’re planning a celebration, a date night, or just craving a seriously good dinner without the pretense, this is the place. It’s consistently delicious, effortlessly beautiful, and refreshingly down-to-earth. And honestly? We could all use a little more of that kind of dining experience in our lives.
What to Try If You’re New:
Garlic prawns in cream sauce with a side of fresh baguette to dip into the richness (life-changing)
Chargrilled steak (medium rare is the sweet spot)
Seasonal greens and mash on the side
A glass of the Nietschke Julius Shiraz or the Italian Alois Legeder Cantina Riff Pinot Grigio
Sticky date pudding or the Affogato

Final Verdict
Teddy Larkin’s is the kind of place you keep in your back pocket but tell everyone about anyway. Because food this good, and service this warm, deserves to be shared.
Freshie, you’re lucky to have it.
